LA PLATA, Md. (WUSA9) -- A volunteer firefighter is dead after her car was struck head-on by another vehicle in La Plata, Md. Tuesday night, Maryland State police said.
The accident happened around 9:06 p.m. on MD Route 425 just south of Tim's Lane in the area of Nanjemoy, Md., police said.
The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Autumn Marie Jenkins, of Nanjemoy, Md. She was pronounced dead at the crash scene, authorities added. Her body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical for an autopsy. Jenkins was a five-year fire fighter/ EMT member of the Nanjemoy Volunteer Fire Department, according to police.
The investigation shows that a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Darren Loyce Windsor, 23, of Indian Head, Md. was going northbound on MD Route 425 while a 2011 Kia Soul driven by Jenkins was going southbound when the accident happened. Windsor was not driving in a single lane and did not drive right of center, police said. His vehicle crashed head on into the victim's car.
The Kia Soul came to a halt off the road in a field and the Chevrolet Silverado came to a halt in the road. Police said alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Northbound MD Route 425 was closed for about four hours for the crash reconstruction. Windsor was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
