Student arrested for setting fire in school bathroom

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- Authorities with Maryland State Fire Marshal's office say an eighth grade student was arrested after she set a fire in a bathroom at Spring Ridge Middle School.

The fire happened Thursday at 10 a.m. at the school in the 19800 block of Three Notch Road in Lexington Park. Authorities say the student set the fire in a plastic trash container in the sixth grade girls' bathroom during MSA testing.

Staff members were able to douse the flames out using water from the sink. The fire caused approximately $15 worth of damage, according to authorities.

The student has been charged with arson of a trash container, malicious burning 2nd degree, and disturbing the operation of school.
