Search on for suspect who injured officers during arrest

SALISBURY, Md. (WUSA9) -- Police continue to search for a suspect who fled from police as he was being arrested and injured two officers in the process.

Thirty-one-year-old Edwin Fletcher is described as an African American male, around 6'2" tall, weighing about 160 pounds, according to Maryland State Police.

The incident happened around 8:00 p.m. Wednesday when officials were working on an undercover investigation attempting to locate Fletcher, who is wanted on a warrant for drug felony charges. When police saw he was pulling into a parking lot off of Market Street in a rented Dodge Ram pickup, they surrounded his truck. There was another person in the truck with him.

The driver of the car, suspected of being Fletcher, tried to flee. He drove his car head-on into a police officer's car. He then drove up onto the second officer's car with the officer inside the vehicle, police said.

Police fired at the car but Fletcher escaped. Police do not know if they struck Fletcher during the shooting. His pick-up truck was found abandoned on Camden Avenue.

The Maryland State trooper and Wicomico County sheriff's deputy were taken to the hospital, treated and released. They will be on leave while recovering from their injuries, according to state police.

State, county and city police continued the search for Fletcher throughout the night. The search is being coordinated by the Maryland State Apprehension Team, a combined unit of police investigators skilled in locating fugitives, and police have notified law enforcement throughout the region to be on the lookout for Fletcher, according to Maryland State Police.

Police have obtained an additional warrant charging Fletcher in connection with the assault on police.
