Safety improvements coming to Route 1 in College Park

College Park, Md. (WUSA 9) -- Major safety improvements have been announced for a notorious section of Route 1 where three pedestrians have been killed since January.

Maryland's State Highway Administration will be lowering the speed limit and installing fencing to stop an epidemic of jaywalking near the University of Maryland campus. A pedestrian activated traffic signal will also be installed at the intersection of Route 1 and Hartwick Rd. near where a 22-year-old woman was mowed down by a hit-and -run driver.

The speed limit in the University corridor will be lowered to 25 mph before the end of the month. The fencing between Knox Road and Hartwick Road will be installed before students return in force at the end of August. The pedestrian signal at Hartwick will be in place by October.
