Police: Man who escaped from Md. jail broke into church

MECHANICSVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- The St. Mary's County Criminal Investigations Division officials say a man who escaped from a detention center committed burglary at a church during the time he was gone.

Fifty-year-old Alan L. Morgan of Hollywood, Md. failed to return to the detention center following treatment at the Walden Sierra Compass House more than a week ago.

On Wednesday, officials sent an update saying Morgan was located and arrested on Laurel Gorve Road in Mechanicsville, Md. on Tuesday night.

Thursday, officials revealed that Morgan pried open the door to Mt. Zion Church in Mechanicsville on Tuesday and stole cash and property. They believe Morgan also broke into nearby the Apple Basket on Mt. Zion Church Road and stole money. Authorities say surveillance video from the business shows Morgan entering the store and taking cash from the register.

Morgan was charged with two counts of Burglary 2nd Degree, two counts of Burglary 4th Degree, two counts of Burglary 4th Degree with Theft and Theft less than $1,000. Officials say Morgan was also charged with escape after he failed to return to Walden Sierra.

Morgan is being held under no bond at the St. Mary's County Detention Center.
