Police investigate possible hate crime at Islamic Community Center in Laurel

Police are investigating a possible hate crime after a truck backed into the Islamic Community Center in Laurel, Md. on Monday night.

The white tractor trailer was caught on surveillance video backing into the building around 11 p.m. on Contee Road.

Police say no one was in the building during the incident and no injuries have been reported.

The Council for American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, is calling for a federal probe into the incident.

“In light of the hostile political climate impacting the American Muslim community, and because of the spike in hate crimes and threats targeting Muslims and their institutions, we urge federal law enforcement authorities to add their resources to the investigation to help bring the perpetrators to justice and to establish a motive for this disturbing crime,” said CAIR Maryland Outreach Manager Dr. Zainab Chaudry.
