Police: auto shop owner shot burglary suspect

BELTSVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- A man who broke into an auto shop in Beltsville late Tuesday night was shot by the owner before fleeing and then crashing his car, according to Prince George's County Police Department officials.

Police say they received a report about a shooting at 11:20 p.m. in the 11300 block of Old Baltimore Pike.

Police say the owner of Lloyd's Automotive told them a man forced his way into the business while the owner was inside and there was a confrontation. The owner then shot the suspect and called 911, according to police.

The suspect then fled from the store and got in his car. He crashed it at the intersection of Virginia Manor Road and Muirkirk Road, say police.

The suspect was taken to the hospital and is listed in critical condition. Police say he is expected to survive.

Charges are pending against the suspect, say police. They are also exploring whether he is connected to other burglaries.

As for the owner, police say he is cooperating with detectives. "After the investigation is complete, the Prince George's County State's Attorney's Office will screen the case regarding the actions of the owner," according to a police press release.
