Prince George's County named a new interim police chief after their current police chief stepped down from duty on Friday.

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA9) -- The head of Prince George's County's police department will soon be taking a higher position in the county, opening the door for a new police chief.

Police Chief Mark Magaw was named Director of Public Safety for Prince George's County on Friday and Deputy Chief Hank Stawinski was named Interim Police Chief for Prince George's County.

Magaw has served as chief of police for the county since 2011. Under Magaw, crime rates were down 40 percent during his time as chief.

"What has been established under Chief Magaw's watch will continue," said Stawinski.
