Memorial fund created for Columbia Mall victim

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A memorial fund has been created for 25-year-old Tyler Johnson, one of the two victims in a fatal shooting at The Mall in Columbia.

An obituary in the Baltimore Sun on Thursday included information bout his memorial fund. Johnson's family is asking for donations in his memory to be made to the Community Foundation of Howard County. Donation can be made to the Community Foundation of Howard County, Tyler Johnson Memorial Fund, 10630 Little Patuxent Parkway, Century Plaza, Suite 315, Columbia, MD 21044.

People can also donate online at the foundation's page. Donors are asked to include "Tyler Johnson" in the Memorial or Honorarium field here:

Johnson's father, Howie, also posted a message to the memorial page. It reads: "Thanks everyone for all your prayers and support. We will be having a memorial service in the near future for Tyler in the Columbia area. Just a quick note: if you give online at the above URL (, please type in "Tyler Johnson" in the "Memorial or Honorarium" field. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Benlolo and Aguilar families too."

A vigil will be held Thursday night at the Columbia Mall for Johnson and Brianna Benlolo.

Johnson was from Mt. Airy, Md. According to his obituary, he worked as a chef in several restaurants before working at Zumiez in the Columbia Mall. He also was part of the Board of Serenity Center in Columbia and worked with the Howard County Drug-Free Program.

Johnson was working towards getting a degree in counseling before his death.
