Md. teacher on leave following alleged sexual assault of minor

FROSTBURG, MD (WUSA9) - An Allegany County teacher is on unpaid leave and facing two counts of sexual assault after prosecutors said he had "sexual contact with a 16-year-old female student."

A public information officer for Allegany County Public Schools said Gary Athey II, 52, taught biology at Mountain Ridge High School.

According to the school's website, Athey taught honors biology, Earth/Space Science, College Biology, and a course in Human Body Systems.

After initiating search warrants at Athey's residence and "different forms of social media" investigators recovered evidence from the residences and from communication devices to support the allegations against Athey."

Athey is facing two counts of 4th Degree Sex Offense.  Prosecutors said he turned himself in Monday afternoon.
