Md. Police: Man stabs himself; shot by police

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (WUSA9) -- Howard County Police Department said a man stabbed himself, confronted officers with a knife and was then shot by police officers in Ellicott City, Wednesday afternoon.

The suicide in progress happened in the 7600 block of Coachlight Lane, around 1:30 p.m., Howard County Police Department said. Family members of the man led the officers to the man inside of the home. Police said, the man had a knife and already had self-inflicted stab wounds.

Two officers had to fire their weapons, police said. The man was taken to the Shock Trauma in Baltimore, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Police have identified the man as 45-year-old Darren Friedman, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
