Md. police make arrest in attempted carjacking

FREDERICK, Md. (WUSA9) -- The Frederick Police Department made an arrest in an attempted carjacking that happened on Saturday morning in the 100 block of Baughmans Lane, Frederick, Md.

Deputies responded to the scene and were told that a suspect tried to carjack a taxi. Police said the suspect was given a ride from the Spring Ridge area to the 100 block of Baughmans Lane. The suspect assaulted the driver and tried to steal the taxi, police said. The taxi driver was able to fight the man off.

Police said the suspect fled the scene and then stole a car parked nearby.

While officers were still on scene at the other location, authorities said the Frederick County Emergency Communications Center got a call about a suspicious man who left a car in the 12000 block of Weller Rd in Monrovia. Frederick County Sheriff's deputies as well as Frederick City police officers responded and verified that it was the same man who had previously tried to carjack the taxi.

Deputies tracked down Ernest Anthony Cross, 27, of Monrovia, Md. and found him in the 12000 block of Fingerboard Rd. Cross tried to leave the house through the back, but failed to do so.

Cross was taken to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center and the stolen car was returned to the owner undamaged.

Police said Cross is being charged with attempted carjacking, second degree assault, motor vehicle theft and two charges of theft less than $100.
