Md. pedestrian dies after being hit by car

COLUMBIA, Md. (WUSA9) -- A pedestrian is dead after being hit by a car Friday night in a parking lot in Columbia, Md.

Howard County Police said the incident happened on a Merriweather Post Pavilion Parking Lot around 10:12 p.m. Authorities said investigation shows that the driver of a 2008 Chrysler Sebring was backing out from where it was parked in the grass lot when it hit and ran over a pedestrian that was behind the vehicle.

Authorities said the uninjured driver of the vehicle has been identified as 30-year-old Justin Wilds of Philadelphia, Pa.

The passenger of the vehicle, 30-year-old Matthew Vrey of North Chesterfield, Va. was also not injured, authorities said.

The pedestrian who was struck and killed has been identified as 42-year-old Erick Jon Girardin of Baltimore, Md.

Police said the driver of the vehicle was not under the influence at the time of the accident. Authorities are looking into the possibility that the pedestrian might have been lying on the ground right before the incident.

Authorities said they believe the two men in the car and the pedestrian were going to the M-3 Rock Festival being held at the venue.

The accident is still under investigation. It will be determined whether or not the driver will be charged once the investigation has been completed.
