Md. fire claims 1 life and injures 2

ST. MARY'S COUNTY, Md. (WUSA9) -- Authorities are investigating a fire that left one woman dead and two adults injured in Lexington Park, Md. Wednesday afternoon.

The Marshal and St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office said the fire happened at 19555 Three Notch Road in Lexington Park around 1:16 p.m.

The fire claimed the life of Marion W. Gatton, 81 and left two adults injured.

Almost 55 firemen were able to get the fire under control within 30 minutes. Authorities said they found the unconscious victim in her bedroom, however were not able to revive her.

Gatton's caretaker, Delores Pennington, 47 saw the fire in the kitchen and was not able to get the flames under control, authorities said. Pennigton received burn injuries to her hands before she was able to escape the heavy smoke.

Authorities said an active duty U.S. Marine, Jon Spindler happened to be close by and tried to help the victims out of the house. Spindler got moderate smoke inhalation injuries before escaping the fire.

Pennington and Spindler were both taken to Medstar St. Mary's Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, authorities said.

The body of the victim was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for determination of cause of death,according to authorities.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
