Maryland State Trooper, man injured after collision in Charles County

LA PLATA, MD (WUSA9) - A Maryland State Trooper was injured after a collision with a car early Saturday morning in Charles County.

Around 2 a.m., police say Trooper Constance Davis, 25, was traveling eastbound on Smallwood Drive at the intersection of Stone Avenue when she collided with a 2013 Chevy Malibu.

After the crash, Davis’ patrol car hit a nearby tree and caught on fire.

Police believe the driver of the Malibu, James Cousins, Sr., 75, was attempting to make a left turn from westbound Smallwood Drive on to Stone Avenue and failed to yield the right of way to Trooper Davis.

Nearby citizens called 911 and helped Davis escape the fire. She was transported to Shock Trauma where she is being treated.

The driver of the Chevy Malibu was trapped in his vehicle for a short time, but was extricated. He was transported to Medstar Washington Center. He has not been identified.

As the CRASH Team continues the investigation, police are asking for any witnesses with information relevant to this incident, to contact the La Plata Barrack at 301-392-1200.
