Man Fatally Shot By Officers Identified

OLNEY, Md. (WUSA) - The man fatally shot outside a restaurant by police on Wednesday has been identified, according to Montgomery County Police.

The armed man was Fritz Otto Naecker, 63. Police have been unable to confirm an address for him. The officers involved in the shooting are identified as Sergeant James Rudnick, a 17-year veteran and Officer Matthew Wiedner who has been on the department since 2007. Both are assigned as uniform patrol officers in the 4th District.

The investigation into the circumstances of the shooting is ongoing. The incident took place around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, when police were called to Urban Barbecue at 805 Olney Sandy Spring Rd. for the report of a man with a gun.

When they arrived, they found a man with a gun on the patio of the restaurant. He had shown the gun to several other customers at the restaurant. They called police, who talked to the man for awhile.

According to a police spokesman, the man failed to comply with commands by the police, and the situation escalated. Two Montgomery County Police shot the man, who was taken to a hospital where he died.

The officers have been placed on routine leave.
