Man charged in Md. attempted murder-suicide

LEONARDTOWN, Md. (WUSA9) -- A 32-year-old suspect has been charged in connection with an attempted murder-suicide that happened earlier this week in St. Mary's County.

Maryland State Police arrested James M. Young, 32 of Leonardtown, Md. Wednesday morning for attempted first degree murder, first degree assault, and second degree assault. Young is being held without bound in the St. Mary's County Detention Center, authorities said.

Police said Young is being charged with attempted murder of his 34-year-old girlfriend, Lashawn M. Hurley,with who he lived. According to authorities, Hurley is getting medical treatment for her injury at a hospital.

Police were called to the couple's apartment a little after 8:30 p.m. Monday. Hurley had been stabbed in her back. Police said Young was with his girlfriend when police arrived and was kept under guard while they were at the hospital.

Young told police he had taken pills in an apparent suicide attempt, police said.

Investigators have been consulting with St. Mary's County State's Attorney Richard Fritz throughout this investigation, authorities said.

Advice was given regarding criminal charges against Young, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
