Local man nearly drowns in Ellicott City pond after canoe tipping

ELLICOT CITY, MD. (WUSA9) - A man is in critical condition after almost drowning in Ellicott City pond Monday morning.

Howard County police were called to a possible drowning around 5 a.m. Monday morning after a canoe tipped over in a pond behind Tangle Wood Court in Ellicott City, according to a release from the Howard County Department of Police.

Police and paramedics found Nicholas Bartko, 20, of Ellicott City, on the side of the pond. Police say they believe a friend had pulled Bartko out from the water before responders arrived.

Bartko was moved to Howard County General Hospital by ambulance, where he remains in critical condition.

The police believe the incident was accidental, according to the release.
