Group to consider possible name change for Byrd Stadium

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - The University of Maryland's president has announced the creation of a group that will consider a possible name change for the school's football stadium.

The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1OxipyW) reports the Byrd Stadium Naming Work Group will hold its first meeting on Monday.

President Wallace D. Loh says the group is meant to provide a "thoughtful and balanced assessment of possible options" regarding the stadium's name.

The group is made up of 19 faculty and staff members, students and alumni.

A coalition of student groups have long advocated for a new stadium name, saying that Byrd Stadium's namesake, former university president H.C. "Curley" Byrd, was a racist and a segregationist whose beliefs go against Maryland's flagship school's mission and principles.

The group's final report is due to Loh in December.
