Fleeing Md. shoplifter jumps into pond near mall and drowns

HANOVER, Md. (WUSA9) -- A fleeing suspected shoplifter at Arundel Mills mall jumped into a sediment pond close to the mall and drowned after being chased by security officers Monday night.

According to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, security officers chased the suspect on foot for about 30 minutes before he entered the sediment pond and began to swim.

Mall security urged the individual to return to the side of the pond and discontinue swimming, but he failed to do so, according to officials. At one point, the individual appeared to dive head first down into the pond and he never resurfaced.

Authorities said around 11:15 p.m. that the shoplifter drowned.

A forensic examiner found no trauma to the individual's body, and preliminary investigation indicates no suspicious factors. Police say they believe this incident to be an accidental drowning.

The man has been identified as 26-year-old Tavon Talley, of Baltimore, Md. Preliminarily, the cause of death appears to be drowning with the manner accidental pending toxicology results.

Police say a second person who was with Talley at the time of the shoplifting, Tania D. Turner, 26, of Baltimore, Maryland, was charged with Theft Under $1,000 for her role in the incident.
