DAMASCUS, MD. (WUSA9) - Putting out a house fire is dangerous business, yet fire crews working to extinguish a blaze in Damascus faced even more danger when the flames and heat caused ammunition inside a police cruiser to explode.
According to Daniel Ogren, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, firefighters were called to the 26600 block of Haney Avenue around 2:45 a.m. for a report of a house fire.
Once crews arrived on the scene they found a single-story ranch-style house and a police cruiser engulfed in flames. Ogren says ammunition inside the police cruiser was affected by the heat and explosions were heard. No one was injured by the ammo.
Two people were transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor smoke inhalation.
The flames destroyed both the cruiser and the whole main floor of the home, Ogren said.
The fire is now out, and an investigation is underway. So far there is no word on the cause or origin of the fire.
