Firefighters respond to gas leak in Elkridge, Md.

ELKRIDGE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services responded to the report of a plastic gas line that had been struck in the area of Ilchester Rd and Landing Rd in Elkridge at 11 a.m. Friday.

Authorities said eight units responded to help control the hazard. Illchester Elementary School and Bonnie Branch Middle School were evacuated around 1 p.m. as a precaution, authorities said.

Our Lady of Perpetual High School was also impacted by the incident, however did not need to be evacuated because school had been dismissed early Friday, according to officials.

In addition, two homes close by were evacuated, access to around 25 homes was denied and residents of about 100 homes were advised to shelter-in-place, authorities said.

The leak was controlled by 3 p.m. Friday and all residents were allowed back into their homes, authorities said. Residents of two residences are still waiting to go back to their homes.

Authorities said Illchester Rd at Landing Rd will be closed for some time. About 1500 students were affected by the gas leak.

The repair is still going on.
