Family of Md. woman set on fire shares story

Every day, the family of this young woman doesn't know if make she'll make it through.

FORESTVILLE, MD (WUSA9) - Every day, the family of Andrea Grinage hopes the news from the hospital is positive.

Grinage has been receiving medical care and has undergone several surgeries after Prince George's County police say her boyfriend Laquinn Phillips, 34, set her on fire September 8th. She was seven months pregnant.

On Wednesday night, her family shared their pain in the hopes of stopping the cycle of domestic violence.

They were part of a crowd of people filling the Word of Life Church in Prince George’s County. They say no one should ever be silent about domestic violence.

"Drea, that’s what we call her, as a mother, sister, aunt, a friend, she’s everything, to my nephews, 15 and 8, she’s everything to them, you know what I mean? How can you do that to somebody?," Andrea's sister said.

Phillips faces several charges including attempted murder, arson and assault.

Andrea's oldest son, Adrian, 15 spoke, too.

"She was a well, kind, loving person and if you’re in a domestic relationship, or anything, speak up, let people know so they can help you so they don’t have to go through what my mother been through," he said.

Adrian is selling t-shirts in his mom’s honor through his Instagram @BGBthemovement.

This is a community talking and having courageous conversations, because every person here is either a survivor of domestic violence or loves someone who is.

The organizer of the event at the church wants to start something called a domestic violence batterers registry, similar to a sex offender registry, that people can check against potential people they want to date.

Andrea’s baby survived. Her daughter was born prematurely, and is now out of the hospital. Her grandmother is taking care of her.
