Driver charged with DUI after man on scooter dies in crash

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD. (WUSA9) - A man has been charged with driving under the influence after police said he hit a man on a scooter and then ran away from the scene in Montgomery County late Saturday night. 

Around 11:15 p.m., police responded to the intersection of Rockville Pike and Congressional Lane for a report a collision. 

Officials said for unknown reasons 24-year-old Mark Steven Andrade of Bethesda and 56-year-old Ross Stanley Redler of Rockville collided. Andrade was driving a BMW, Redler was driving the scooter. 

After the collision, police said Andrade stopped his vehicle and fled on foot. Redler was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. 

Officers were able to locate Andrade. He was arrested for driving under the influence. He was not injured in the crash. 

The investigation is ongoing. 

Investigators will consult with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine if Andrade will be charged with additional offenses related to this collision.
