Bail set for mom in boy found dead on swing case

After a three-month investigation, a grand jury indicted the Charles County mother with manslaughter, felony child abuse and neglect.

LA PLATA, Md. (WUSA9) -- Four months after a three-year-old Charles County boy was found dead in a swing, his mother was indicted on charges of manslaughter, child abuse and neglect.

Authorities announced on Monday that a Charles County Grand jury indicted Romechia Marie Simms of La Plata for her actions involving the death of her son Ji'Aire Donnell Lee.  Simms is charged with manslaughter, first-degree child abuse and child neglect.

Simms was arrested on Saturday. She was arraigned on Monday in the Circuit Court for Charles County, Md. where her bail was set at $150,000.

If she makes bail, Simms will only be able to have supervised contact with children and cannot have a supervisory role with children. At this time, she has not made bail and remains in the Charles County detention center. 

The charge of first degree child abuse carries up to 45 years; manslaughter carries up to 10 years; and child neglect carries up to 5 years in jail.

Ji'Aire Lee was found on a swing at Wills Memorial Park on the morning of May 22. He died of dehydration and hypothermia, according to the Charles County Sheriff's Office.
