ATV driver in critical condition after Md. accident

EDGEWATER, Md. (WUSA9) -- The Anne Arundel County Police Department said a 17-year-old ATV driver is in critical condition after a collision that happened Saturday in the Edgewateer, Md. area.

Police said, they responded to an accident around 5:26 p.m. on Welchs Drive. According to authorities, a Yamaha ATV was going north bound on Welchs Road, approaching Daisy Circle. Police said, the teen driver started braking before the intersection. The left tire of the ATV went off the side of road while braking.

According to police, the ATV's tire hit the tongues of two small trailers that were right off the road on the grass edge of private property. Authorities said, the impact coming from the tongues caused the ATV to overturn and left the driver on the road.

Anne Arundel Police Department said the teen was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The cause of the accident was due to speed and the driver's mistake, police said. According to authorities, the ATV was not registered and the teen does not have a license. The victim was also not wearing a helmet, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
