2 girls charged in Maryland playground fire

JOPPA, MD. (AP) - Two girls have been charged in connection with a fire at a Maryland playground.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal said in a statement that a 13-year-old girl and a 12-year-old girl admitted their involvement in the fire Wednesday at a playground in Harford County. The statement says firefighters were called to the playground in Joppa on Wednesday afternoon and that the playground equipment is a total loss. The statement says the equipment cost over $1,000.

The State Fire Marshal's office says the girls' parents contacted authorities because they believed their daughters might be involved in the fire. The office says the girls admitted they had set a notebook on fire at the playground and then left the area.

No injuries were reported.
