Va. crash leaves 2 dead

MANASSAS, Va. (WUSA9) -- Officers responded to a car crash in Manassas early Sunday morning that left two people dead.

Prince William County Police said they were called to the scene of a crash at 1:21 a.m. The two vehicle crash happened in the area of Dumfries Rd. and Minnieville Rd. in Manassas.

The investigation showed that the driver of a 2012 Honda Civic was going southbound on Dumfries Rd. and proceeded to make a left turn on a red light at the intersection with Minnieville Rd.

While making this turn the Honda crossed paths in front of a 2003 GMC Envoy, which was going northbound on Dumfries Rd. This caused a T-bone collision, authorities said.

Police said the driver of the Envoy had the green light to go through the intersection. As soon as the two vehicles crashed, the Honda caught on fire.

Two of the first responding officers used fire extinguishers on the flames and they were able to cut the seat belts and get the driver and a rear passenger from the car, authorities said.

Police said the person seating in the front was not able to get out of the car until the Department of Fire and Rescue team go to the scene to help.

The passenger sitting in the back of the Honda, Francisa Knauf, 60, of Triangle, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the Honda, a 61-year-old woman of Woodbridge was taken to a nearby hospital immediately and remains in critical condition. The front seat passenger of the Honda, 35-year-old Gisela Zuniga, of Woodbridge was also taken to the hospital, however died of her injuries.

Police said the driver of the Envoy, a 39-year-old woman of Delaware and a 27-year-old passenger, also of Delaware were both taken to the hospital. Both have been released since then.

Authorities said all of the people involved in the crash were wearing seat belts at the time. There is no indication of alcohol or drug use being factors in the crash, police said. Speed being factor is still being investigated.
