Man charged in officer-involved shooting in Lanham

LANHAM, Md. (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County police say a man who was shot in an officer-involved shooting in Lanham early Wednesday morning has been charged and remains in the hospital.

Police say an off-duty officer in full uniform was driving a marked police cruiser in the 6700 block of Green Haven Road at 12:45 a.m.

He spotted what appeared to be a suspicious, parked car with two people inside. Police did not say why he felt the car was suspicious.

The officer approached the car, ordering a suspect out of the car. The gun of the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Ricky Lamounte Reid Jr., fell to the ground, say police.

Police say Reid did not follow the officer's orders to raise his hands and instead, reached for the gun. The officer then fired his weapon, hitting Reid.

According to police, Reid's injuries were not life-threatening. He is in custody at a hospital.

Police also say the gun was reported stolen from Virginia. They have a warrant charging Reid with handgun and theft charges.

The officer involved in the incident is on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
