LIST: DC area Earth Day events this weekend

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Here are just some of the events happening in our area for Earth Day and Earth Week:

The National Aquarium is urging the public during the 48 days between Earth Day (April 22) and World Oceans Day (June 8) to make water conservation pledges as part of the organization's 48 Days of Blue awareness campaign. These simple pledges include: using a reusable bottle, leaving the car at home twice a week, carrying all purchases with reusable bags, and turning off the faucet while brushing one's teeth. You can make a pledge at, and can follow the conversation on social media using the hashtag #48DaysofBlue.

Alexandria will hold Alexandria Earth Day 2014 on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year's celebration will be held at Ben Brenman Park at 4800 Brenman Park Drive. The event will feature the Upcycling Showcase, where students will showcase their creative interpretation of Earth day through literature, fashion, visual arts and performing arts.

Also, DASH will be offering free rides for the Earth Day Event on DASH AT8 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visit for bus routes and schedule info.

Laurel will host an Earth Day Park clean-up on Saturday at Granville Gude Park. Volunteers will meet at the Gude Lakehouse, 8300 Mulberry Street, at 10:00 a.m. A limited supply of free Earth Day T-shirts will be available.

SpringFest Fairfax 2014 takes place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Workhouse Arts Center located at 9601 Ox Road in Lorton, Va. Learn about trees, celebrate Arbor Day, visit the petting zoo and more.

AAA is holding its car battery recycling program through April 28. When a member has a new car battery installed and the old battery recycled, AAA will plant a tree in a national forest. AAA Mid-Atlantic will be accepting old car batteries for recycling at Car Care Insurance Travel locations in Fairfax, Fredericksburg, Manassas and Rockville.
