One option discussed in a budget briefing included shutting down the 20-lowest performing stations during off peak times.
The majority of those stations are east of the Anacostia River and out into Prince George's county.
Neighborhood and rider groups were outraged and have been gearing up for a fight.
But, a Metro spokesman said talk of cutting service at the 20 low performing stations was intended to spark a discussion about the seriousness of the quarter-billion dollar shortfall the system is facing. It was not intended as an "actual proposal."
