WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- More than 12 million cars use Beach Drive each year. As of Thursday they have to find another way around.
The busy road is officially shut down for work. Certain sections of the road will be closed for the next three years.
Crews have broken down the project into four segments. Phase one started on Thursday and will end in the spring. The second part of the project will the kick off.
The total cost of the project is $33 million and is coming from federal taxes.
Drivers, pedestrians and cyclists should avoid the area.
