Holocaust survivor killed after being hit by school bus

SILVER SPRING, Md. (WUSA) -- An elderly man died after a collision involving a school bus in Montgomery County on Wednesday, officials said.

The bus accident happened around 2:23 p.m. at the intersection of Columbia Pike and Tech Road, police said.

The bus, contracted by howard County Public Schools, had 14 kids on board, say officials. They were returning from a field-trip to the White House. All of the kids have returned home to their parents since the incident.

Police identified the pedestrian as Elia Miranski, 91, of Silver Spring. Family members confirm to WUSA9 that Miranski was a Holocaust survivor.

According to police on Thursday, Miranski had safely crossed the southbound lanes of Columbia Pike, then attempted to cross northbound lanes. The bus was traveling through a green light and hit Miranski, say police. The first two lanes of northbound Columbia Pike traffic was stopped on a red, left turn arrow, according to police.

The driver of the bus is Lori Jean Latimer, 52, of Elkridge, Maryland, according to police.
