Historic DC church celebrates 200th birthday

Historic DC church turns 200 years old

A Georgetown church is celebrating a big birthday this weekend.

Mt. Zion United Methodist Church turned 200 years old Saturday. The church claims to be the oldest African-American church in D.C.

According to Reverend Dr. Johnsie Cogman, the church was founded by both free and enslaved black Methodists. The church also has a landmark cemetery and rare English cottage.

The church held both a gala and a public tour of its facilities to celebrate the anniversary.

At 3 p.m. Sunday, the church will hold a celebratory worship service, too. Reverend Dr. Cogman said D.C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton is expected to visit.
