Woman allegedly sexually assaulted near bus stop in Gaithersburg

Gaithersburg police are investigating a sexual assault near a bus stop.

GAITHERSBURG, MD. (WUSA9) - Police are investigating after a woman was allegedly sexually assaulted and possibly raped near a bus stop in Gaithersburg early Friday morning.

Around 6 a.m., Gaithersburg police got the report of the incident near a bus stop located in the 100 block of Garth Terrace.

Police say the victim was waiting for a bus when she was approached by the suspect. That is when the suspect grabbed the victim and pulled her toward a wooded area next to the bus stop.  According to police the man then sexually assaulted the victim and fled from the area. They say she ran from the area and called police.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Police describe the suspect as a black male in his 20s, who was seen wearing a dark color-checkered shirt or jacket. 

This is an ongoing investigation and as additional information is confirmed, it will be released to the public.  Detectives are asking anyone who may have information about this sexual assault to call the Special Victims Investigations Division at 240-773-5050. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). Crime Solvers will pay a cash reward of up to $10,000 for information provided to their line that leads to an arrest and/or indictment for this sexual assault.
