Md. man arrested for assaulting police officer

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA9) -- Police arrested a 48-year-old man in Gaithersburg, Md. Tuesday for assaulting a law enforcement officer Monday evening.

Gaithersburg Police Department said they responded to an incident in the 100 block of Teachers Way for the report of an unknown situation. Police said citizens said there was a white man yelling and screaming. The callers then said the man was lying on the ground in front of a building and then got up and started running around the parking garage screaming and jumping on cars.

Once the officer arrived at the scene, he spotted the man who had been described on the by the callers. The man was on the second floor the parking garage. As the officer was getting out of his car, the man charged at the officer, pinning the officier's arms against the car door, authorities said.

Police said the man then began to choke the officer as he was pinned up against the car. The police officer was able to free himself authorities said, and then a physical struggle began. The man ignored the officer when he told him to stop fighting. Police said, more officers arrived at the scene to help.

Authorities said police realized the man may have been under the influence of narcotics and suffering from an altered state of consciousness. An ambulance with Advanced Life Support and an officer with an Automated External Defibrillator were then requested.

The man tried to get an officer's handgun away from him, police said, but he was unsuccessful. The man struggled with officers even after he had been handcuffed, police said.

Officers continued to keep him under control and the man was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment and evaluation, police said.

After the man was taken to the hospital, a search and seizure warrant was executed at his residence. Police found dangerous substances and paraphernalia.

The man was released from the hospital on Tuesday and an arrest warrant was obtained and executed, police said.

Henry Fuchs, 48 of Gaithersburg, Md. was arrested for assault, disarming of a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and possession of controlled dangerous substances. Fuchs is currently being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center.

"I commend the officers for their restraint and professionalism in the handling of this situation and taking all of the necessary steps to prevent any further harm to this individual," Police Chief Mark P. Sroka said. "Mental illness is a serious concern and we want citizens to know that our officers are being trained on how to recognize those signs and how to deal with them."
