LAKE LINGANORE, Md. (WUSA9) -- One person was killed Saturday after heavy rains caused a boat to go over a dam on Lake Linganore in Frederick County.
The man killed in the accident has been identified as Stephen Wade Hembree, 62, of New Market, according to the Associated Press. He was the operator of the boat.
According to Maryland State Police, nine people were on board the boat when rising currents caused it do go over the dam and into the rock spillway below.
Four people on the dam ledge were rescued by boat and another person was rescued by Frederick County water rescue teams, state police said.
Three juveniles however were still trapped on rocks that were inaccessible by land or boat, according to state police.
Because of the inaccessibility, plus concerns about hypothermia, state police used a rescue basket to hoist the three teens out of the water.
The three teens, two 17-year-old females and one 15-year-old female, were transported to Frederick Memorial Hospital and will be OK.
Unfortunately, one person in the boat passed away. State Police did not provide any additional details about them or how they died.
