Building a park to remember two young girls

MYERSVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- In January of 2013, a Myersville family of six suffered a devastating fire that not only completely destroyed their home but killed two young sisters, six-year-old Sophie, and three-year-old Madigan Lillard.

The parents, Jack and Chrissi Lillard, described their difficult healing process saying, "For us, when we throw-in the fact that we lost everything that the girls physically touched, everything that the girls have made, it made it that much tougher."

"Searching for those types of things," Chrissi said," …made it just that much harder."

The couple told WUSA9, they have come to rely on their memories to comfort one another.

Jack and Chrissi decided to help other families create those fond memories by building a park they plan to call: The Sophie & Madigan Lillard Memorial Park.

Through donation, the family received, 10 acres of land from what is now the VWF Golf Course located on National Pike in Frederick, Maryland. They are currently working with the city to have several different themed-playgrounds. This is something they say Sophie and Madigan would have gone crazy over.

They are hoping to cover the cost of the memorial park with the proceeds for an event that is planned for August 9, 2014. It's called "Kidstock" and will be an entertainment, music and arts festival with around 60 vendors already signed-up to participate. Doors open at 10 a.m. at the E-Ventplex, which is also home to the Great Frederick Fair.

The Lillards said you can buy tickets at the gate for $15 and $10 for tickets purchased online in advance. The couple told WUSA9 Tuesday, the VIP tickets for $50 a piece are already sold out. The couple thanks the community for the support.

Jack Lillard said the Kidstock fundraiser will have all the things they know their daughters would have enjoyed. More importantly, Chrissi said, "really the big thing is just going to be watching all these families make memories with their kids. It's just going to be amazing to know that our girls had that impact on our community."
