MERRIFIELD, VA (WUSA9/AP) - Police in northern Virginia says a man is dead of an apparent self-inflected gunshot wound after reports of a shooting led to the evacuation of an office building. No one else was hurt.
Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin Roessler said at a news conference that the department received several 911 calls reporting a shooting at a building in Falls Church just before 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The incident happened at a building on the 8100 block of Gatehouse Road in Fairfax County. That building is near the Fairfax County public Schools headquarters and a child daycare facility.
According to police, reports of the shooting were isolated on the fourth floor of the building where a law firm is also located. When police got to the scene, they found the gunman dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The man has been as 52-year-old John Francis Wood of Vienna, Va.
Police say the intent of Wood is not known. Also, they are not sure about the condition of his mental state prior to the shooting.
One person who was in the building when the shooting occurred told WUSA9 that the gunman appeared to be unstable.
Shortly after the shooting, police evacuated all children from the site to a nearby school. Hundreds of other people were placed on lockdown inside of the building.
