Swift water rescue team from Virginia arrives in Texas

CHANTILLY, VA. (AP) - More than a dozen members of an elite search and rescue team from Virginia have gone to work in Texas to assist with the response to Harvey.

Chuck Ryan, an assistant chief with Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, said in a video Wednesday that the 14 swift water rescue specialists have been assigned to Kingwood, Texas, a suburb of Houston, where they are responding to calls for help.

The rescuers are members of Fairfax County's elite Urban Search And Rescue team, also known as Task Force 1, which is deployed around the world to respond to natural disasters.

Ryan said Tuesday the team was initially diverted by federal authorities to San Antonio for staging until a decision could be made on where to send them.
