Dump truck brings down wires in Elkridge, trapping residents

ELKRIDGE, MD. (WUSA9) - A dump truck brought down poles and power lines in Elkridge early Tuesday morning, causing a closure on Route 1 and trapping residents inside and outside of their neighborhood.

According to Howard County Police, the dump truck was doing road work in area of Rt. 1 (Washington Blvd.) and Amberton Drive around 1:52 a.m., when it traveled approximately a quarter mile with the bed raised, damaging power lines and poles around. No injuries have been reported, however the incident has shut down Route 1 between Troy Hill Drive and Route 100.

Police say residents in the neighborhood off Amberton Drive cannot leave their homes or return to them at this time.

Right now BGE and Maryland State Highway Administration are on the scene, along with police, working to make repairs and reopen the area to vehicles.  A recent Howard County Police Tweet indicates closures will remain through morning rush.  All northbound Rt. 1 traffic is being diverted to Rt. 100 eastbound. Southbound traffic must turn around via Troy Hill Dr.
