Toddler dies in accidental drowning in Northeast DC

An investigation is underway into the apparent accidental drowning of a toddler.

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) - A young boy is dead after he drowned Tuesday afternoon outside what neighbors say is a home daycare in Northeast D.C.

Police said the incident happened just before 4 p.m. in 300 block of 17th Street NE.

The boy, who was just under 2 years old, was transported to the hospital in serious condition. Police say he died in an accidental drowning.

Investigators are waiting on autopsy results from the medical examiner’s office for his exact cause of death.

Family members at the scene told WUSA9 they are horrified that a child is dead. A long-time friend of the woman who runs the daycare said she's cared for children for 30 years.

Police haven't said if charges will be filed. The investigation continues.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in children ages one to four. You can learn how to keep your child safe in pools and spas by checking out the Pool Safely website.
