Pools open for unofficial start to summer

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- This is the weekend to kick off the unofficial start of summer which means area public pools are open for business.

Whether in Maryland, D.C. or Virginia folks came for fun in the sun.

Rusty Moore said,"Just having a good time with friends and family, holiday weekend."

Judy Stiles, the Montgomery County Recreation Spokesperson said, "it's been a long hard winter for our residents and staff, we're so excited the pools are finally open and that the weather is cooperating."

At the Bethesda Pool off Little Falls Parkway little Reece has been itching to be poolside.

"I was excited it was a really warm day. We haven't gone swimming since last year," Reece said.

For some, the water was a bit chilly, but people are just happy to be outdoors near water.

That was the case at Banneker Pool in NW D.C..

"This is our baby's first time in the pool. He's 8 months old. I dipped my foot in and that's as far as I'm going to go," said Michelle Roberts.

If you missed day one pools will be open through Labor Day.

You'll want to check your local pool for hours of operation and some pools will have restricted hours on Memorial Day.

D.C. Parks and Rec says they've doubled the number of spray parks.
