Police: Stabbing of transgender teen possible hate crime

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Metro Transit Police say that the stabbing of a transgender teen on a Metro train Wednesday may have been a hate crime.

Police say a transgender teenager, identifying as a female, was riding a Green Line train around 4:38 p.m. when she was stabbed by 24-year-old Reginald Klaiber of Greenbelt.

Witnesses reported that Klaiber made bias-motivated remarks about the victim's transgender status right before stabbing her, according to police.

Officials say the victim has non-life threatening injuries and is being treated at the hospital. Metro Transit Police were able to arrest Klaiber and retrieve the knife used in the incident. The train was going toward Branch Avenue.

Klaiber has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon and faces enhanced penalties for hate/bias motivation.
