New DC speed cameras start ticketing Friday

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- No more warnings: The grace period is over and Washington's 15 new traffic cameras will start issuing tickets beginning today to violators.

Fourteen of the cameras will detect speeding vehicles and one of them will ticket oversized trucks. Fines range from $50 to $300, they are the highest speed camera tickets in the region. If you don't pay it in 30 days, that ticket will double.

A 2014 speed limit and safety Nexus study by D-Dot shows these cameras have reduced the number of accidents in the district by 17 percent, and the number of injury related accidents by 20 percent.

"The cameras work, but we think this should only be a supplement and a compliment, not a substitution, to the police officers who make the biggest difference when they are out there enforcing traffic laws. When they give you a ticket, it's something you never forget, and you modify your behavior forever," says John Townsend II, AAA Mid-Atlantic.

"Think about this - there are more than 30,000 crashes in the city every year, that's 85 a day. So these cameras are making a big difference in how we behave, and how we drive behind the wheel.

"Fifteen new automated enforcement sites are activated today including new speed cameras and one oversized vehicle camera which will ticket oversized vehicles that go down the wrong street, and then the other 15 cameras who will ticket motorists who will go over the speed limit," says Townsend.
