National Zoo's seal pup named

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The gray seal pup born on January 21 has been named Rona by the American Trail keepers, zoo officials said Thursday.

Rona's name was inspired by the island of Rona, which is located between the west coast of Scotland and the Isle of Skye.

Zoo officials said the seal pup and the zoo's six other seals have started introductions between Rona and the others. The pup is greeting the seals by touching nose-to-nose and breathing in the other seals' faces. Zoo officials said this is considered to be the equivalent to a human handshake.

Rona has already greeted her mother, and her grandmother the same way.
