Metro turns 40

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Happy 40th Birthday, Metro!

It was March 27th, 1976 when the first stations opened. Metro offered free rides along the red line between Rhode Island Avenue and Farragut North. The system started charging two days later.

The transportation system has been grappling with shrinking ridership and recently shut down system-wide for the first time not to due to weather but because of emergency electrical inspections.
