Md. man makes Forbes '30 Under 30' for helping NFL players off the field

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) - A local man who helps NFL players with professional development, off the field, receives the Forbes 30 Under 30 honor.

For some football players who find themselves out of a job on the gridiron, the transition can be scary. Whether it is an injury that ends a career or the decision to retire from it, some NFL players have to face the harsh reality.

But Dior Ginyard, a player manager with the NFL Players Association, makes sure they are prepared for it. Ginyard connects players to externships in various fields. In some cases, those opportunities have turned into jobs.

“It’s been great,” said Ginyard, ones of Forbes’ most recent honorees. “Last year, we had 41 guys across 15 companies and a couple of them have actually earned jobs.”

Fanatics, an online retailer for sportswear, hired one of the players three years ago. That player now manages a group of 20 people.

Last season, Ginyard ran the NFL’s Externship Program.  He also helps players return to school to finish their education.

“I tell every guy when I go into the locker room ‘at some point you’re going to need a degree’,” Ginyard said.  Since the league reimburses them for tuition, according to Ginyard, he encourages them to take advantage of the opportunity.

When asked about advice for players on the brink of a transition or those going through it, he said it is important to have an open mind.

“Expose yourself and find out what you’re really passionate about, “ Ginyard said. “That’s how you hone in on what you really want to do.”

When Forbes recognized Ginyard for his contribution, he was happy and surprised.

“I’m just humbled and grateful,” he said with hopes of inspiring others.
