Man drums his way through the District

Drummer inspires dancing in the street

Malik Stewart started to play the drums when he was 12 years old.

For the most part, he says, he taught himself how to play.

Now, it's a part of who he is.

"I can't imagine myself doing anything else," he said. "I don't want to do anything else."

Stewart plays his piccolo snare with drumsticks, his hands, his feet, and sometimes while juggling.

He rarely stops moving, and people across D.C. are falling in love with his sound.

He has more than 50,000 followers on Instagram, and when he performs on the sidewalk in some of D.C.'s busiest neighborhoods -  everyone seems to stop.

Stewart sees his music as a way of life.

He created the brand, D.O.P.E Entertainment, to go along with it.

"The thing is. Everybody's a percussionist," Stewart explained.

"It's life. You may not be a percussionist but you're still a drummer... anything that is active, moving, it's all percussion."
