Man charged with assault on an officer after shooting in DC

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) - A man is being charged with assault on a police officer after a shooting in the District late Friday night.

Around 11:12 p.m., officers in plain clothes responded to the 900 block of Whaler Place in Southeast for sounds of gunshots. When they arrived, they saw a suspect fleeing the scene on foot.

While in pursuit of the suspect, his firearm was displayed. Police the officer fired his weapon, hitting the suspect.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He remains in critical condition.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.

The officer and the suspect have not been identified.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Internal Affairs Bureau responded to the scene and will be responsible for the investigation. Since the officer involved is assigned to the Gun Recovery Unit, a plain clothes tactical team that is used to interdict illegal firearms, there was no body worn camera footage that captured the incident.
